Awards and Merits

District students and schools have garnered many awards and honors based on both the achievement of students and the programs designed to support student achievement. All District elementary schools, all three middle schools, and both comprehensive high schools have been recognized as California Distinguished Schools -- a total of 100% of Burbank schools have been awarded this most prestigious honor presented to public schools in California. In addition, the District's continuation high school, Monterey High, has been selected as a State model school. Some of the awards received by District schools last year include Miller Elementary's selection as a model school by the Center for Civic Education, Disney Elementary's designation as a "Model 21st Century School"; Luther, Muir, and Jordan Middle School's state championship (1996, 1997, 1998 respectively) in the National Academic League; Burbank High School's first place finish in the Northern Regional Academic Decathlon Competition and eighth place in the state finals, and Burroughs High School's two teams placing in the top ten in the State Odyssey of the Mind competition.

Student achievement can also be seen in the numbers and quality of student music performances, the professionalism of student art exhibits, and the level of participation on athletic teams. Students also exhibit leadership through student government, award winning publications, and community and workplace learning.

The community of Burbank supports its schools through volunteer efforts and financial support. Over, 2,000 citizens are registered as volunteers, and their efforts are augmented by very active Parent/Teacher Associations. In 1997, the community passed a General Obligation Bond in the amount of $112.5 million to repair and renovate Burbank's public schools.
